Product launch email: how to announce a new collection

A product launch email works best as a short sequence: a teaser a few days before, a VIP first look for your best customers, the launch email on the day, and a follow-up only when you have real reviews or a real restock, each sent to the customers most likely to care.

What a product launch email sequence includes#

One email on launch day reaches the people who happen to open it that morning. A short sequence gives customers a reason to look out for the drop, rewards the ones who buy most, and follows up with news rather than repetition. The example throughout is Ninefold, a small apparel brand releasing its autumn outerwear: a wool overcoat, a quilted liner jacket and a waxed cotton field jacket.

Reviews2–3 weeks afterClicked but did not buyReal customer reviews, only if you have them

Not every customer should receive every email. Most of the list needs only the launch email. The teaser and the follow-ups go to the people whose behavior shows interest, which keeps your sending volume and complaints down.

The teaser: build interest without wasting a send#

A teaser earns its place only if it gives the reader something to plan around: the date, the time, and what the collection is. A mystery email with a blurred photo and no date gets ignored.

  • State the launch date and time in the subject or the preheader, with the time zone.
  • Show one product clearly, or a detail of the fabric, and name the collection.
  • Give one reason to come back: the waxed cotton is new this season, the overcoat is cut from the same wool as last year’s sold-out scarf.
  • Send it to subscribers who bought or clicked outerwear before, not to the whole list.

A teaser promotes a product, so it is a commercial email: it needs your postal address and a working unsubscribe link, like any other marketing email under CAN-SPAM S1.

A VIP first look for your best customers#

Your repeat customers are the people most likely to buy at full price, and a head start costs you nothing. Open the collection to them 24 to 48 hours ahead with a private link or a code that unlocks the product pages.

  • Define VIP in a way you can count: three or more orders, or a VIP tag you already use.
  • Write it as a personal note, signed by the owner, not as a sale announcement.
  • Say when the general launch opens, so the window is clear and true.
  • Exclude VIPs who buy from the launch email the next day, or thank them instead.

The VIP presale template has this structure ready to adapt.

The launch email on the day#

The launch email carries the collection. Lead with the product, not the brand: one strong image, a sentence on why it exists, then three items at most with names and prices, and one button. Customers reading on a phone see the top third; put the most wanted item there.

For Ninefold, the story is short and concrete: three jackets for the months between a light coat and a heavy one, each made to layer. The new arrival template follows the one story, three products, one button pattern.

After launch: social proof and stock news, only when real#

Follow-ups are where launch emails most often stretch the truth. Two rules keep them honest and keep you clear of regulators.

  • Reviews only if they exist. The FTC’s consumer reviews rule bans fake reviews and testimonials, and reviews bought with incentives that depend on a positive sentiment S2. If the jacket has five genuine reviews after three weeks, quote them. If it has none, skip the email.
  • Scarcity only if it is true. The FTC has named countdown timers on offers that are not actually time-limited as a manipulative design pattern S3. “Last sizes” means the sizes are low; “back in stock” means it is back.

A back-in-stock email is the most welcome follow-up, because it answers a question the reader asked. Send it to customers who clicked the item or asked to be told, and name the sizes. The back-in-stock template is built for this.

Timing and segmenting by interest#

Pick a launch time your customers already buy at and keep it fixed across the sequence, so the teaser’s promise holds. Space the emails so each one carries news; a teaser, a VIP note and a launch email in five days is plenty for most small lists.

The bigger risk is sending every launch email to everyone. Google asks bulk senders to keep the spam rate in Postmaster Tools below 0.10% and never reach 0.30% S4, and repeated emails to people who do not care about the category are a common source of complaints. Segment by what customers bought and clicked: outerwear buyers for the teaser, repeat buyers for the VIP note, clickers who did not buy for the follow-ups. See email segmentation for ecommerce and how often to send marketing emails.

Running a launch from Claude or ChatGPT with Tellnod#

With Tellnod, each email in the sequence is one request in the chat. Each one is a campaign you approve; the sequence does not run on its own.

  1. “Email customers who bought outerwear in the last 12 months: our autumn outerwear launches Thursday at 9 am. Show the waxed field jacket.” Tellnod counts the segment and shows desktop and mobile previews.
  2. “Now a VIP note for customers with three or more orders, with a private link that opens Tuesday.” Ask for changes in plain words, then a test send to yourself.
  3. “Schedule the launch email for Thursday at 9 am to all subscribers, excluding VIPs who have ordered since Tuesday.”
  4. On each confirmation card, check the audience, exclusions and send time, then press Confirm. The AI cannot press it, and a scheduled campaign can be cancelled until it goes out.

After launch, ask “How did the launch email do compared with the teaser?” for a results card in the chat. Plans start free; see pricing, or connect Tellnod to Claude or ChatGPT.

FAQ#

How many emails should a product launch sequence have?

Three is enough for most small shops: a teaser, a VIP note and the launch email. Add a follow-up only when you have real news, such as genuine reviews or a restock.

When should I send a new product announcement email?

Send the teaser three to five days before, the VIP note one to two days before, and the launch email at the time the collection goes live, at an hour your customers usually buy.

What should a new product announcement email include?

One clear image, a sentence on why the product exists, up to three items with names and prices, and one button. Put the most wanted item at the top for phone readers.

Should I send launch emails to my whole list?

Send the launch email to all subscribers, but keep teasers and follow-ups for customers who showed interest in the category. That keeps complaints and unsubscribes down.
