# Email marketing for shops without a marketing team

> A small shop without a marketing team can run email marketing in about an hour a week: collect consent at checkout, send one or two useful campaigns a month to a clear segment, send from your own verified domain, and keep every campaign short with one call to action.

## A one-hour-a-week routine

1. **Collect consent.** Add a clear opt-in at checkout and on your site. Keep a record of when and how each person agreed. [Double opt-in](https://tellnod.com/glossary#double-opt-in) gives you the strongest record.
2. **Pick one goal for the month.** A new arrival, a restock, a seasonal gift guide or bringing back lapsed customers. One goal per campaign.
3. **Choose a segment.** Recent buyers, people who have not ordered in 60 days, or VIPs. A smaller, relevant list beats emailing everyone.
4. **Write short, preview on mobile.** A subject under 50 characters, a [preheader](https://tellnod.com/glossary#preheader), two short paragraphs and one button. Most people will read it on a phone.
5. **Test, send, and read the results.** Send a test to yourself, then send. A week later, look at clicks and orders, not just opens, and repeat what worked.

## What to send in a typical month

| Week | Campaign | Audience | Template |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | New arrival or restock | Everyone subscribed | [New arrival](https://tellnod.com/templates/new-arrival) |
| 2 | Nothing, or a short story from the shop | Everyone subscribed | — |
| 3 | Win-back offer | No order in 60–90 days | [Win-back](https://tellnod.com/templates/win-back) |
| 4 | Thank-you or VIP early access | First-time or top customers | [VIP early access](https://tellnod.com/templates/vip-early-access) |

## The rules that matter

- Only email people who agreed to it. Do not buy or rent lists.
- Include a working unsubscribe link and your postal address in every marketing email (CAN-SPAM in the US) [S3].
- Send from your own domain with SPF and DKIM; Gmail requires bulk senders to add DMARC and to support [one-click unsubscribe](https://tellnod.com/glossary#one-click-unsubscribe) [S2].
- Keep spam complaints low. Gmail recommends staying below 0.10% and never reaching 0.30% [S2].

## Doing it from an AI chat

If you already use Claude or ChatGPT, you can run the whole routine there with a connector like Tellnod: describe the campaign, check the preview, and approve the send on a card. See the guides for [Claude](https://tellnod.com/guides/send-email-campaign-from-claude) and [ChatGPT](https://tellnod.com/guides/send-marketing-email-from-chatgpt).

## FAQ

### How often should a small shop send marketing email?

Start with two to four campaigns a month. Consistency matters more than volume; watch unsubscribes and complaints and slow down if they rise.

### Do I need an email marketing platform?

You need something that handles unsubscribes, consent records and sending from your domain. Sending campaigns from a personal Gmail account by hand does not scale and can hurt deliverability.

### What is a good list size to start?

Any size. A list of 200 engaged customers can drive more orders than 5,000 who never opened an email.
